The brilliant thing about Spotlight Search on iOS devices (and Macs!) is that it’s way more than just a search.
As a search it’s impressive but it can be used for so much more.
How about an Application Launcher or to kick off your favorite album or to quickly browse through all the ‘Bobs’ in your Contacts.
Everyone has their own preference on how they use search and you can now customize the results order so it’s even better.
Apple has included the ability to sort the order, by category, in which the results appear.
I, for example, use spotlight search as an App launcher for my apps more then anything else because I have way more apps then I should and can never find anything.
To make thing a little better and quicker, I push the Applications category in the spotlight search resilts to the top of the page for quick access.
To set your preferred sort order for spotlight search results do the following:
1. Tap Settings > General > Spotlight Search
2. Using the 3 lined handle on the right hand side of each item, drag the item you prefer up or down the list until their in the order you’d like.
This was tested on an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3.2 but has been available since iOS 4 on all iOS devices.
