The recent iPhone tracking scandal hitting the news is prompting many to enable encryption on their iPhone backups through iTunes.
This is all well and good but what about old backups?
Enabling encryption for your iOS devices backups only encrypts future backups.
You can check which backups are encrypted and which are not by opening iTunes preferences, clicking the Devices tab and viewing the Device Backups section.
If a backup is encrypted it will have a picture of a little lock to the right of the iOS device’s name.
So any backup without the lock is still unencrypted and should be deleted.
To delete, simply click a backup and hit the Delete Backup… button.
This applies to all iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models that sync with iTunes and was tested with iTunes 10.2.2 on Mac and Windows 7.
